Summer Art Workshops 2008
Let your imagination soar this summer!
Summer Art Workshops provide positive creative experiences for children entering first through sixth grades. Led by artists and art teachers, each workshop includes lively gallery sessions, imaginative activities, and unique art projects. Students will investigate art and stretch their imaginations through play, experimentation, and exploration.

General Workshop Information
- Register early! Enrollment is limited to sixteen students per workshop.
- Workshop fees include a T-shirt, a daily snack, and all art materials
- Regular workshops run Tuesday through Friday (Bizarre Botanicals Workshop runs Monday through Friday)
- Half-day morning session, 9:00 AM-noon.
- Half-day afternoon session, 1:00-4:00 PM.
- Full day workshop, 9:00 AM-4:00 PM, includes morning and afternoon workshop, and supervised lunchtime. (Students must bring a sack lunch.)
- To reserve a space in any workshop, full payment must be received.
- Refund policy: A $15 fee will be charged for all cancellations confirmed prior to June 1. No refunds can be granted after June 1, 2008.
- A limited number of partial scholarships are available to students who are eligible for financial assistance. Please call 614-629-0358 to receive a scholarship application. All scholarship applications must be received by May 1, 2008.

June 17 - 20
Painting with Pizzazz; Instructor: Amy Buscemi
9:00 am - noon
Get wild! Get messy! Get ready to have a blast with paint! But don't expect to paint with ordinary brushes this week. We will be experimenting with unlikely painting gadgets such as brooms, balls, and toilet plungers. Explore the Museum galleries to find out how artists use paint in different ways. Then, discover new ways to have fun with paint.
Colossal Creatures; Instructor: Amy Buscemi
1:00 - 4:00 pm
Dragons, unicorns, and even Bigfoot are all fair game in this enchanted workshop. Build your favorite mythical beast or create your own make-believe creature using papier mâché. With paint, paper, cardboard, fabric, fur, and anything else on hand in the studio, your wildest ideas will spring to life in a dramatic production on the final day of the workshop.
July 8 - 11
Tip Top Topiary; Instructor: Julie Freeman
9:00 am - noon
Bring your hiking shoes for this down-to-earth workshop. We will be walking to the Topiary Garden in the Deaf School Park on Town Street. The topiary brings to life a famous painting by Georges-Pierre Seurat. Inspired by this living sculpture as well as by great works in the Museum collection, you will create your own life-size topiary.
What Goes Around Comes Around; Instructor: Suanne Goings
1:00 - 4:00 pm
Your head may be spinning following this playful workshop where everything is round. CD-ROMs, hula-hoops, and pizzas are just a few of the circular objects that may end up in your artistic creations. You'll be amazed at the importance of the simple circle in art, design, symbolism, and stories. Join us as we explore circles through games, food, and art!
Workshops for students entering third and fourth grades
Bizarre Botanicals
Double your fun by participating in this exciting new workshop, which will be held at the Franklin Park Conservatory and the Columbus Museum of Art! At the Conservatory, discover unusual plants. Investigate how some bizarre plants eat, "breathe," and grow. At the Museum, have fun exploring great art. Inspired by exotic plants and by world-class art, you will create your own whimsical and bizarre botanicals.

Price: $85/member, $95/nonmember
Location: Monday and Tuesday workshops will be held at the Franklin Park Conservatory; Wednesday through Friday workshops will be held at the Columbus Museum of Art
July 22 - 25
Art Project Runway; Instructor: Donna Sparks
9:00 am - noon
Embrace your individualism in this funky, high-energy workshop. You'll look at works of art in the Museum galleries for inspiration to create one-of-a-kind wearable artwork using everyday materials such as bubble wrap, CD-ROMs, or a garden hose. On the final day, we'll roll up(?) the carpet and the music for a dance party.

You'll need a little bit of math and a lot of imagination for this workshop about the circle. From CD-ROMs and hula-hoops to mandalas to mazes, we'll spend the week searching for circles to use in our artwork, games, and even food. No squares are allowed during this week of well-rounded fun!
July 29 - August 1
Playing with Picasso; Instructor: Elizabeth A. Kaufman
9:00 am - noon
Peek into the curious world of Pablo Picasso and other Cubist artists during this entertaining workshop. Try sketching a self-portrait with a broken mirror, and then construct an unusual Cubist-inspired mask. We'll have fun looking at the world from a Cubist point of view. And, on the last day of the workshop, the entire class gets involved in acting out a Picasso painting.
Comic Relief; Instructor: Jennifer Gillette
1:00 - 4:00 pm
Laugh out loud all week long in this fun-filled workshop. Explore your comic side as your make humorous collages, funny sidewalk drawings, and a comic book to treasure. You'll get a chance to play goofy games in the Museum galleries and even act out some favorite paintings as you seek inspiration for your own comic creations.
Workshops for students entering fifth and sixth grades
June 24 - 27
Road Trip; Instructor: Kate Lantz
9:00 am - noon
Imagine driving down the Interstate behind a horse trailer, an ambulance, or a Winnebago. What do you imagine is happening inside? In this unusual workshop, we'll take an imaginary road trip for inspiration. Using paint, cardboard, and myriad found objects, you'll reconstruct the backside of a vehicle and illustrate the unlikely story that transpires within.
Smashing!; Instructor: Bob Tavani
1:00 - 4:00 pm
Warm up your muscles for this high-energy workshop. You'll be stomping, smashing, crushing, and rolling with your body and some other unlikely tools to create one-of-kind prints, collages, and assemblages. We'll be yanking the sod roller out of the garage and the rolling pin out of the kitchen to smash paint and pattern on masks, clothing, and boards.
