Calling Museums and Galleries: Join Columbus Museum of Art for #HeartsforArt

Hearts for art

Art has the power to inspire, transform, transfix, and unite us.

Once again Columbus Museum of Art is inviting museums and galleries to join us in celebrating Valentine’s Day with #HeartsforArt, February 11-16, 2020. Launched by Columbus Museum of Art (CMA) and Oakland Museum of California in 2014, Hearts for Art is a fun way for visitors to express their love for art.

Here’s how Hearts for Art works:

Online: Encourage visitors to share their art crush by taking a picture and using hashtag #HeartsForArt, and tag your museum across your favorite social media platforms.
And/or in the galleries: Have hearts available for visitors and encourage them to place the heart in front of a work of art they love, take a picture, and share using #HeartsForArt, and tag your museum on social media.

Feel free to hack the project to fit your institutional goals. CMA will be celebrating from February 11-16, 2020, but feel free to join in anytime that week or the whole week. Participating museums in the past have included Oakland Museum of California, Denver Art Museum, Minneapolis Institute of Art, Philbrook Museum of Art, Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History, Detroit Institute of Arts, and many more.

This year to better track participation in #HeartsforArt we’re encouraging museums and galleries interested in participating to fill out a Google Survey.

#HeartsforArt Survey

We’ll be sharing some of our favorite posts throughout the week, and including them in an online gallery.

Creativity Thrives When Fashion Breaks Its Own Rules

Olly Awake

From Columbus-based Olly Awake’s gender equal fashion line

For many years, fashion has been synonymous with femininity. Take a look at generations of red carpet photos and you’ll see it – women in elegant gowns, high heels, sparkling jewelry and professionally done hair and makeup.  In general, men have sported classic black tuxes or pinstripes.

In recent years, these traditional fashion roles have started to change. Styles from the 2019 Met Gala were probably the biggest and boldest examples of this. Ugly Betty’s Michael Urie wore a half-pinstripe suit, half-pink tulle gown, offset with professional makeup, dangling earrings, a glittery clutch and delicate heel while the tulle gown was accompanied by Doc Martens and an unshaven face. Jared Leto wore a dress. Ezra Miller wore a diamond corset and sported bright red lips.

It’s not uncommon to see women in suits on the red carpet these days either. From Amy Poehler, Kate McKinnon, Kristen Stewart, Sandra Oh, Miley Cyrus and more, celebrities are leading the way for gender-bending fashion.

In Columbus, fashion label Olly Awake is making a name for itself as a fashion brand for everyone and anyone with its gender-equal designs. Their pieces are free from traditional gender labels and restraints and their sizes run in shapes, not numbers.  For this year’s Wonderball, we are lucky to have Olly Awake designer Celeste Malvar-Stewart and founder Kevin Terry Smith serve as event hosts, so we sat down with them to learn more about this concept.

What are some key elements of gender-equal fashion?
Gender-equal (as we call it) or gender-neutral fashion begins with true intention. While we obviously believe anyone can wear any piece of clothing they choose, for us creating a gender equal line is a dedication to specifically designed clothing to meet this need. Fashion design, just like architecture or graphic design, seeks to resolve a problem. We are working to create a pathway for people to wear clothing that transcends traditional gender norms.

Olly Awake focuses on several elements: fit, movement, feeling and relevance to our community. Our aesthetic stands separately: sleek, modern and structural. We start at ground-zero, rethinking the basic design of our garments so they create a beautiful fit that is a compliment for many gender presentations.

Why was it important to create this line?
We talk a lot about pathways and transformation in our brand. Movement of thought – out of darkness, into light – from confusion and discomfort, to boldness and self-confidence. We want to be one tool our community can use to become the best versions of themselves they can be.

From the individual to a larger scope, we firmly believe that design has the ability to create real change in society. It was difficult for differently abled folks to move through public spaces, until community intervened and demanded intentional design that allowed open access to everyone. This is the power of design when it meets intention and bold thinking – it changes the world.

How has the Columbus fashion community responded to this line?
The Columbus fashion community is like a big warm hug. We are pretty unconventional: we don’t really do shows, our community of ‘Olly fam’ are typically people outside the fashion scene, you get the idea. The fashion community in Columbus has been so wonderful in embracing us – quirks and all!

How can Columbus continue to support LBGTQ+ artists and designers?
Columbus has done such a great job in supporting LGBTQ+ artists and designers by attending events that support their work and by actually purchasing! By buying the work, we sustain the artists and designers in their endeavors!

What are some recommendations for how Wonderball guests can show their fashionable sides outside of traditional gender roles?
Gender equality is all about the movement of being our true selves, so the most fashionable way to express that is to wear what makes us feel expressive and free! Free from the conventional gender mindset. So, if you feel like a fancy suit is what makes you feel that way, that’s fantastic! Or perhaps variations on the traditional wear, like a suit jacket with a long train or a giant kimono over a jumpsuit or a fabulous kaftan with a ruffled neckline! The sky is the limit!

So, this Saturday, come to Wonderball in whatever makes you feel most truly and uniquely you! We look forward to seeing everyone’s fabulously styled black-and-white creations.

Check out OllyAwake.com to learn more about this new line.

(Please note: Wonderball tickets will NOT be sold at the door).

4 Tips for Accessorizing Your Wonderball Outfit

On January 25 fashion will take the stage at Wonderball, the Columbus Museum of Art’s 6th annual celebration of the Ohio arts community! Wonderball features live local musicians and DJs, performance artists, interactive exhibits, local food and drinks and unexpected experiences throughout the evening. This year’s theme is Fashion, which showcases Central Ohio’s vibrant fashion arts community.

Every year, Columbus creatives have wowed the crowd with outfits ranging from elegant to outrageous. CMA encourages guests to select looks that make them feel stylish and confident. Wonderball’s only rule is that guests stick to classic black-and-white themed attire. No black ties are required (unless that’s the look you’re going for)!

Whether you’re attending for the first time or the sixth, there are plenty of opportunities to showcase your signature style. Looking for simple ways to add flair to your black-and-white ensemble? Here are 4 tips for accessorizing your Wonderball outfit.

Showcase your shoes

Showcase Your Shoes
To paraphrase Carrie Bradshaw, “give a person the right shoes and they can conquer the world.” Pair an elegant dress with a chunky boot for a grunge-inspired look; or accent a formal suit with an edgy sneaker. Stilettos are always in style, but we recommend checking the weather forecast before breaking out your favorite strappy heels.

Bring the Bling
Choosing the right jewelry can elevate even the simplest outfit. A bold necklace, brooch, or armband can add an unexpected pop to your ensemble. Choose one piece of statement jewelry that you want to showcase and build your outfit around that. Or, curate a themed ensemble to display your unique taste – there’s no better night to show off your costume jewelry! If you prefer a subtler look, watches and cufflinks are understated options for any ensemble.

Tie Your Look Together
Accent a plain black or white outfit with a bold patterned scarf. Blanket scarves or shawls can add an extra layer of style in cold weather. Small scarves and bandanas can be tied around the next or worn as hair wraps. If you’re sporting a suit coat, a pocket square is a playful way to incorporate your own flair.

Wonderball

Top it Off
Bold headwear is an easy way to make a statement at Wonderball. If you’re wearing a suit, a flat cap, bowler, or trilby will help you recreate a classic look. Accessorizing with a fascinator à la Meghan Markle adds timeless flair to a cocktail or evening dress. Whether you’re sporting a blowout, updo, or no hair at all, the right headwear can elevate your outfit.

There are countless ways to incorporate your signature style into your look. Purses, suspenders, canes, eyewear, and so many other accessories are unique ways to share your style with Wonderball.

Show off your hair. Bespoke Salon Studio in Bexley is offering a variety of special beauty services for Wonderball including free gloss with any hair color or free haircut with any color service with certain stylists. At the Nūrtūr Salon + Spa in the Brewery District receive a Wonderball Blowout (shampoo and down-style of your choice) plus a travel sized Aveda hairspray for the special price of $30.

And, of course, since this year’s theme is fashion, show up to Wonderball wearing a local fashion designer look, and support Columbus’ amazing locally based fashion designers.

Don’t miss your chance to showcase your look at Wonderball. Your ticket directly supports CMA’s programs and Central Ohio’s arts community. Tickets are on sale now – don’t miss your chance to get them at a discount!

Fashion Takes Center Stage at Wonderball 2020

Wonderball

Wonderball co-chairs Celeste Malvar-Stewart and Kevin Terry Smith

Bring in the new decade in style by putting on your finest black and white attire and celebrating Columbus’ fashionable side at Wonderball! On January 25, the Columbus Museum of Art (CMA) will host the 6th annual celebration of Central Ohio’s arts community, featuring live local musicians and DJs, performance artists, interactive exhibits, local food and drinks and unexpected experiences throughout the evening. This year, the theme for the event is fashion.

Fashion-forward Columbus

With the third-highest concentration of fashion designers in the country, only trailing New York and Los Angeles, Columbus is a fashion capital. The Ohio State University offers a strong Fashion and Retail Studies program focusing on merchandising or product development, and Columbus College of Art and Design’s (CCAD) revered fashion design program, known as one of the best in the country, features an annual spring fashion show that draws an international audience.

This talent helps support the success of major national retailers that call Columbus home, including Express, Abercrombie & Fitch, Victoria’s Secret, Eloquii and more. It’s also thanks to these designers that the Short North Arts District refers to more than just works on canvas, as the neighborhood has a huge roster of clothing and accessories boutiques that would make any city proud and it’s home to the nation’s most fashionable costume party – HighBall Halloween.

Plus, our own Easton, called “The Rodeo Drive of the Midwest” by USA Today– was a revolutionary creation in the retail world. Concepted by Les Wexner, the approach looks at malls through a lifestyle lens and, while continuing to expand to this day, serves as the blueprint for the modern shopping center.

Two of this year’s hosts – Columbus-based designer Celeste Malvar-Stewart and her business partner Kevin Terry Smith – are making a splash in the fashion community with their line Olly Awake. Olly Awake is forging a new sector in the fashion industry by creating what they have coined ‘Gender Equal’ clothing. Gender neutral apparel is on the rise, and since 2017 this startup has made its stamp with intentionally designed pieces that are built from the ground up to be free from traditionally held standards for gendered fashion.

Why Wonderball?

Not only is Wonderball a one-of-a-kind opportunity to engage with the museum and members of Columbus’ creative class, but it also supports a variety of CMA programs that enrich our local community through arts. These programs include:

Wonder School: A collaboration between Columbus State Community College, Columbus Museum of Art and The Childhood League Center for children ages 3 to 5 that seeks to foster purposeful play, encourage critical inquiry and create a collaborative community approach to education for both children and educators.

Sparking Imagination: Made possible through partnerships with the Alzheimer’s Association of Central Ohio and AWARE (Alzheimer’s Women’s Association to Reach and Engage), the monthly Sparking Imaginations tour is designed to inspire laughter and imagination for people living with dementia and their caregivers by providing a fun, expressive outlet and forum for dialogue.

Teen Open Studio: A free after-school program held on Thursdays and Fridays at CMA in an area that incorporates lab space, technology resources and art supplies to allow teens flexibility to work on homework, experiment with the arts or just hang out with friends.
