Take a moment with this work by Veronica Fernandez, one of the artists in PRESENT ’23.
Veronica Fernandez’s paintings draw from her own memories, family struggles, and inherited trauma to illustrate the complexity of contemporary American identity and intergenerational relationships. She combines images from her childhood photo albums with art historical references and personal recollections to create evocative, nostalgic scenes. The artist says, "Growing up, I was very distanced from my roots. I’m Dominican, Puerto Rican and Bolivian. I’m very mixed . . . I think a lot of people in the U.S. grapple with this kind of assimilation into American culture."
