Produced by Allie Martin, PhD,
This is a Black Neighborhood is the culmination of her time as an Aminah Robinson Fellowship and Residency Program writer-in-residence, where she has spent three months living and working in the late Aminah Robinson's home studio. The Aminah Robinson writing residency is organized by CMA and celebrates the legacy of the late Columbus artist by supporting the work of African American writers, researchers and scholars from across the nation.
For this presentation, Martin will transform the gallery into a ‘Black neighborhood’ by incorporating soundscape compositions sourced from various locations across Columbus. During her residency, Martin carefully listened to the sounds of the city, capturing the essence of different neighborhoods and community events from arts festivals to Juneteenth celebrations. The installation will also include sounds collected during her time spent in Washington, DC, and Prince George's County, Maryland. In addition to the new soundscape, the installation will feature interpretations of Aminah Robinson’s composition.
